How Did Google Adsense Started?

I would like to know how did Google Adsense started, basically two questions:
They had where to put their Ads (websites) but they didn´t have Ads to display?
They had Ads to display but in what websites?

    Adsense was officially launched by Google in June 2003.
    The ad came from Google Adwords. Prior to launching, Google has invited several websites to beta test Adsense and the results were overwhelmingly positive. Not only did it widen the reach of their advertising program but allowed publishers to earn better income from advertising.
