Firstly, it is not important if you are not looking for money from your blog. If you want to publish quality articles but not money for that you should not add google adsense.
But, if you are looking for some money from your blog than you can add that but you will not earn too much if you have not too much traffic. For example, you can earn $10-$30 even less per month if you have not better traffic. If you have good traffic you can earn hundreds per month. Experts say that if site have not too much traffic than adsense is not profitable. But, in this case affiliate banners and links are profitable.
But, if you have good traffic regularly you can use adsense but try adding code in different places of your site like – Under the header, below post title, just below top navigation bar, left/right column and even inside the content of your post. But, more important is to generate traffic for your site first.

The most important thing to earn real good money with AdSense is valuable content for your readers. Because you can have a lot of traffic, but if your content is not interesting visitors will leave your site fast and your earnings will be poor.
Placing of the Ads is another thing, colours of the ads too, but not only.
I don`t know what`s about is your blog, but you should consider to write on some NICHE things, niche – I meant low competition but valuable in AdSense. There are a lot of places around you can find top paying AdSense keywords, look for them, choose several of them and build up the blog around them. Create unique valuable content and promote your blogg in highly pageranked Web 2.0 sites, you will see the traffic fast, and your earnings will grow too. Belive me because I am building hundreds that kind websites and still using this method, it works really great.

Google Adsense is an easy way to instantly monetize your site. It takes time, but the more traffic you receive the more Adsense clicks you should receive. You have to put the Adsense modules in good places on your site that are visible to your visitors.
The best thing about Adsense is that the ads are geared toward the content of what a person is viewing so they may be more inclined to click on them because they are similar to what they are looking at.

    Google AdSense features these safeguards:
Competitive ad filters. You can block competitive ads, or other ads you want to keep off your site, simply by telling us which URLs to block.
Ad Review. Before ads appear on your site, they’re reviewed using a combination of human and automated processes. The review process takes into account a variety of factors, including the quality of the ad and whether it’s suitable for all audiences.
Sensitive content filters. At times, certain ads may be inappropriate for some pages. For example, Google automatically filters out ads that would be inappropriate on a news page about a catastrophic event.
Choose your own default ads. In the unlikely event that Google is unable to serve targeted ads on your page, we offer you the option of displaying a default ad of your choice. This ensures that your advertising space is always being used as effectively as possible.
Customize ads to complement your site.
You spend lots of time perfecting your website’s look and feel, and we want AdSense to fit in. So we let you customize the appearance of your ads to fully complement your site by choosing from over 200 colors and 24 pre-set color palettes (you can create and save your own custom palettes using a simple point-and-click color selection tool.
Track your earnings with online reports.
With AdSense, you can monitor your ad performance with customizable online reports that offer details like the number of page impressions, clicks and click-through rate. You can track the performance of specific ad formats, colors and pages, and spot trends quickly and easily. how much you can earn on google adsense depends primarily on the amount of traffic – you can calculate it as
    traffic/10 * 28cents
this means your traffic or which you can get 10% click rate on your ads and then an average of about 28 cents per click

Adsense will help you monetize your blog (ie. make money from it)
But to do this you will need a high volume of targeted traffic to your site otherwise you wont make much $$ at all.
Your blog will need to have rich content to enable Adsense to display relevant ads for your vistiors, that will also give you a higher CTR (Click Through Rate) which results in a higher ROI (Return on Investment).
