Question by marvel ous: Is there a difference between buying a domain name or hosting a website?
I’m looking to run a website for my father and I saw on yahoo.com that you could choose between hosting a website, and buying a domain name. I’m not too familiar with buying/hosting domains and websites so I’m clueless as to what I should have my dad do.
What would be better to do? Host a website or buy a domain? Or are they just about the same thing?
Thanks!

Domain name and hosting a website are two different things.
Domain name is the name of the URL. Just like the domain name of Yahoo is yahoo.com ; google is google.com
All websites require a server to run on. When you access a website, you’re actually accessing a server. That is hosting a website.
When you want people to connect, you will need to give them something to connect to. It can be the IP address. However, for certain reasons, people want to mask that IP address. They do that by hiding it behind a domain.
Some hosting companies offer free domains, although they are usually not very attractive. I hope this answered your question. For more information, please do read up on Wikipedia about DNS and domains, since what i have stated above is a simple explanation

The web host is the service that runs the computer that has your web site on it. The name of your web site (such as yahoo.com) is the domain. The web hosting site will create a domain for you, but that hosting site may have hundreds or thousands of domains running for its one hosting site. They will be the people who give you the “.com” you will need to access the page.
