Question by Kinger: Is there a difference between buying a domain name or hosting a website?
I’m looking to run a website for my father and I saw on yahoo.com that you could choose between hosting a website, and buying a domain name. I’m not too familiar with buying/hosting domains and websites so I’m clueless as to what I should have my dad do.

What would be better to do? Host a website or buy a domain? Or are they just about the same thing?

Thanks!

Question by csemahesh: Are buying a domain name and getting webhosting spaces different things?
I saw a site offering domain names for very cheap rates , is it enough if I buy those domain names alone to have my own site or do I need to get hosting also by paying extra money?

No, you need both. Many sites offer the domain name itself for .99 or less, but you still need a server to host it on. Unless you plan on leaving your personal computer on 24/7 and racking up huge bandwidth charges, you will need to rent the space from somewhere else. Generally it will cost you about 0 per year on top of buying the domain name.

Question by John M: How do I go about Buying a domain name from the current owner wihout getting cheated?
I’m talking to a guy through email about possibly being able to buy a domain name that I wanted, but he owns. Is there a specific process to buying a domain name from the current owner?

Whats to stop him from getting the money from me and then just keeping the domain name?

Is there a standard (or semi-standard) way to decide on a price based on traffic and stuff like that. The website is currently parked on Godaddy.com and has no content, and has been since Nov 06 when it was purchased according to the WhoIs record.

Any help would be great. thanks.

Question by none123: Does it matter who I buy a domain name from? What should I look for when buying?
Is it all price or is there more to it?

Answer by leelou21uk
It’s mainly price but some may charge you if you want to move your name to another provider.. Not a problem really..

I suggest you have a look at http://www.hosting24.com they will register a domain name for free for life and come with unlimited webspace and unlimited data transfer and you can go with them on a monthly basis.

Also when you sign up with them if you enter in a discount code they will give you 25% off their ridiculously cheap hosting plans. code to use is 25OFF

I host all my sites there and have been more than pleased with their help and support which is available by phone support! I hope this helps

Lou

Question by shahram m: What’s the difference/advantage of buying just a domain name versus hosting services?
I am asking this question because I am entertaining the idea to start a consulting business and want to have a website that gives information about my services. Thank you very much

The domain name is just the address. Hosting is like the land where you actually build the house. Often the fees are separate.

If you’re building your own site with software, you can build a basic site (up to 10 MB of space, which is fine for something small) with one fee for address and hosting at www.nameroute.com ( for both fees for one year).

You can also use a site builder system that will charge you some amount per month for hosting PLUS everything you need to build the site. Sometimes these include the domain name. My favorite site builder is www.sitekreator.com

There are plenty of other builders out there, though. Do a web search. I’ve tried out every system I could find, though, and Site Kreator gives the best bang for the buck.
