Question by RC Landscaping R: How do I get a domain name from a company that doesn’t use it?
I have a company that i am starting and want to have a certain domain name. It is taken by this company called Field Lake and sky admin. I emailed the company and they wont even sell it to me. When I go to the website i want it is that cheap search engine crap. Is this illegal? and what can i do about it?

i would get a webpage host, godaddy, vistaprint, whatever and if the name is taken they approach the owner for you, and let you know if it was accepted or not, sometimes when a larger company approaches the owner they are more likely to sell than just from one person individually

Question by BCPix: Is there any recourse against web hosting company arbitrary shutdown?
6 months ago I posted a question about my dealings with Host Excellence, the web hosting company where I host 2 sites. Briefly the issue I was having was that although I had purchased and paid for an “unlimited” plan, which they advertise as unlimited web space. It turns out that there is all kinds of double-talk in there disclaimer that basically states that you really only get “fair share” of storage space, which, in my case topped out at about 11GB before I started to interfere with their servers and thy took me offline. I was able to get my sites back online by getting my storage space down to under 10 GB and now only have about 5GB of content up. I also removed a CGI script from my homepage which they claimed was slowing down their servers (although they profess to fully support CGI). This morning, even though I have not changed anything on the site in the past 6 months, since being re-instated, I was shut down again, for the same reason. They will not re-instate me until I agree to comply with their requirements, which they have not yet made clear to me. Which brings me tho my question:

Are all web hosting companies this shady? Do I have any recourse against their false claims or have they covered themselves in their fine print. I would love to move my sites off their servers and will probably do so when my prepaid agreement expires, but I don’t know how to determine what company might be more honest in their approach to dealing with their clients and would hate to end up in the same boat all over again with a different company. Also, to any prospective web hosters out there I would, at this point, have to recommend that you avoid Host Excellence, or at least not take their claims at face value!

I can understand your frustration but you should contact hosting providers before you start filling up your website with content. I personally use Chime Host and they offer the same option for unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth but i haven’t had that problem with them yet. I am using around 7 GB of space and so far things are okay. But I do know the moment my site utilizing excessive resources such as cpu, memory, ram, I will be asked to either upgrade to vps or cancel hosting. I researched every host out there before settling for chime host and only reason i settled with them is because they don’t force you to pay for 1 years or 2 years in advance. I am on month to month basis and I can leave whenever i want.

Question by The Green Bastard: What is the best web hosting company on the market?
I’m looking for a host for my small website (under 25 pages). Any input on good/bad experiences with web hosts? Who is the best?

Network Solutions is really good. I’d recommend going with the Standard hosting package. You get everything you need plus a free domain name for 0 a year. A little pricier than some, but their service is top notch.

Question by Johnny rotten: Is this illegal ? A rival company has used a domain name the same as our company name to direct people to them?
I wanted to set up a web page for our business. On trying to secure the domain name i found that a rival company has secured the .co.uk domain name with our name in it.
When you do a search it takes you to a page which re-directs you to their website!.
Can they legally do this ?.I know they can secure any domain name that’s available but can it be used in this way ?

Not being an attorney my best guess is that unless you took out a copy right on the name or trade marked it you have little recourse.

I made a similar mistake about 10 years or more ago, I filmed a television commercial and used my company name in the commercial prior to obtaining the domain name for it. Later when I applied for the domain name, I discovered the .com was in use elsewhere. However, .org, .net, .biz, .mobi, were all open and available so I registered them.

Your difficulty appears to be the redirect page, and that is an entirely different can of worms.

I would suggest changing your domain spelling enough to get away from the redirect.

Or change your domain altogether which would completely solve your problem.

You state you want to set up a web page; and this leads me to believe you haven’t gone to that expense yet, and are in the planning stages. So changing your domain name shouldn’t be that difficult.

If you are adamant about the domain name you’ve chosen, then I suggest using .mobi . There are millions more people with mobile devices than computers, and if you build your site to be .mobi compliant, you’ll open up a big world of customers.

People in third world countries may not have computers, but they do have mobile phones to communicate with, think about it.
