Question by GGG: After the process of domain name registration, does your computer act as a server to host the website?
Thanks in advance.

Answer by mrPhil
it can do, it depends on wether the domain name host offers you webspace or not. (check your account) if it does, you use the webspace on the host server, (read host’s faq)
otherwise you have to set something up on your router to link your dynamic ip to your domain name host, (google it)
set up iis on your pc (google it or microsoft help)
build your website and publish it to your iis folder. (microsoft help should help)
not very secure though.

help at all?

Phil

Question by Justin E: Any advice on starting a webhosting and computer consulting business?
I have a friend of mine who has offered to set me up with a linux-based VPS, and was thinking of starting a webhosting business with this? In addition I was thinking about doing some consulting like setting up servers for small businesses, setting up home wireless networks, and PC repair? Any advice?

I have been self-employed as a systems engineer for over 3 years and the best advice I ever got was don’t undervalue your services. It is much easier to give discounts than it will be to raise your rate in the future. Bill for every minute you work and then add lines to your invoice like “New customer discount” or give them a discount if the hit a certain number of hours each month/quarter/year. Be confident in your skills and what they are really worth. Don’t give it away. Let them know why you are giving them a discount. The second best advice I got was “A value that is not recognized is no value at all.” In other words, if your clients don’t know that you are doing something special for them they will come to expect it. List everything you do on your invoice. The final advice is to form a LLC or a business entity that will separate your work from your personal life. If for some reason a client wants to take legal action they will have to take it towards your “company” not you. They cannot go after your personal possessions. Self-employment is awesome! I will never go back to working for the “man”. I wish you the best of luck.
I hope this helps.

Question by heathos33: What is the best webhosting site for those who are computer illiterate?
I work for a high school ministry at my church and am wanting to create a website to point the parents to for all the information they need. I’ve been looking at justhost.com and bluehost, as well as others, even homestead. Does anyone know of a site like these that offers very user-friendly website design, as I know nothing when it comes to creating a webpage. Thanks for your help!

Question by sunder360: How to activate/transfer newly acquired domain name on the server I am using on my computer at present?
I am using P4 with Office2000 and Windows XP [Home edition]. I have aquired a new domain: sunder360.info and I wish to transfer to my current server and activate it.
If any of my friend can help me /guide me on this issue, I shall appreciate. I am 75 years old and have designed my homepage to be hosted against the new domain name as mentioned above. Thanks a lot

If you are talking about transferring this domain to your personal PC you will need a web server running on the PC and you will need a IP address of your modem to bind to the domain name.

Question by sam9898989@rocketmail.com: What is a computer domain name used for?
At the moment I use DynDNS and have a Computer Domain Name but I only use it to check my torrent with WebUI. What else can it be used for?

hi,
Each computer directly connected to the Internet has at least one specific IP address. However, users do not want to work with numerical addresses such as 194.153.205.26 but with a domain name or more specifically addresses (called FQDN addresses) such as www.commentcamarche.net.

It is possible to associate names in normal language with numerical addresses thanks to a system called DNS (Domain Name System).

This correlation between the IP addresses and the associated domain name is called domain name resolution (or address resolution).
