Free hosting usually involves the company putting banner ads in you web pages. They have to pay for it some how. And the free sites usually have more restrictions on bandwidth allowed and size of the site.

Question by Ivory Herman: What is the difference between domain registering and hosting?
I need to get a website up for my church again. I used Yahoo to build my site, but I want to go to a different service becasue I can’t my new payment information in their systems (it keeps giving me this temporary error message) and their customer service makes me wait hours on the phone.

If I buy a domain from GoDaddy.com for a year, does that mean I log into their website and upload pages to my website? Or do I have to find yet another service to host my site? I am a bit confused.

I just want to buy the .com for a year, and log in and upload my site, etc.

If you purchase a domain name from GoDaddy, you do get a certain amount of space to set up a free website. This may be enough for your needs.

Question by brndbradsh: What is a Domain name and what is the difference between the Domain name and a Website.?
This is all new to me and a little hard to figure some things out, but I am assuming that what ever name you pick for your website will be your Domain name after you register your Website. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

A domain name is the address such as www.xxx.com. A website is the physical page that the domain name points to. There are usually many pages within a domain such as www.xxx.com/page1.html. If no page is indicated then the default is www.xxx.com/index.html.

You are right about registering a domain. If you use a site such as Geocities you can use their’s. You get a name such as www.geocities.com/username/index.html. Index.html would be the home page and you can then add many others. Someone going to your site would type www.geocities.com/username and it would go to index.html by default.

Question by gorjusgirl: What is the difference between a domain name and web hosting?
I want to get my own website up and running, so I went to look at prices around the place… I found a good site which has domain names at /year, but I’m confusing myself because I’m not sure of the difference between a domain name and web hosting – I want quite a lot of space, and I will use Frontpage to make my site because that also has an upload facility attached, so I just need the domain name right?

However, I cant see anything about how much space I get when I buy a domain name, so this makes me think I need to get web hosting…. please help!!

Thanks :)
I’m still confused – so if it says Domain Names and then Web Hosting 4.50, do I need both? Or can I just buy a Domain Name and use Frontpage to upload my pages to that name? Sorry… I can be a bit thick sometimes…

A domain name is the www.yoursitename.com and web hosting is the comany that will host that domain name and give you space to put your website up onto the World Wide Web and allow people to access and view your website.
:) Good
