Question by rectar: Can I register a domain name at one place and get hosting from another ?
If say I register my domain name at godaddy.com , but I want to use free webhosting at atspace.com with that domain name. How does that work?

Yes!
You need to get the DNS addresses (1 and 2) from atspace and input them under domain forwarding at Godaddy.com.
If you already have an address (URL) at atspace, you can also just forward the domain to that and use ‘masking’.
It becomes active in anywhere from 2 hours to 48 hours.

You could install the APACHE web server in the windows version (or Linux if you have it). There are bundles together with PHP.

Then you can host your website on your computer.

If you have a dynamic IP Address and your router supports it, you can use “dyndns.com or .org” to create a dynamic hostname for your website.

So whenever the router receives a new ip address, it updates the record at dyndns (most routers support this) and I’m sure that if you only have a cable modem, that you can find a client software that updates the dyndns record from your pc.

The only cost you will have is the internet connection to your ISP. Plus electricity of course.

But aware, if the page is for business use, or gets more traffic in the future, some ISP’s will not allow you to host this service.

Question by jeff_cougsfan: If i buy a domain name from godaddy without a web hosting plan, then what?
I just want to know what would happen if i bought a certain domain name from godaddy.com without choosing one of their web hosting plans. I want to do this to save money but will it still work? Can I host it from my home computer with a basic internet connection? are there any safety concerns associated with this?

Your better off using a server farm. Meaning maybe use the services of GoDaddy for the hosting. Usually you get 1 or 2 free domains with a hosting plan. They are pretty cheap if it is a linux hosting plan. A windows hosting plan would be a little more.
Basically, about 6$ a month if your just doing a basic site with out all the bells and whistles (secure server/shopping cart).

Question by Indiana Jones: How do I move a website from one host to another, and transfer the domain?
They both use cPanel.

Best answer:

Answer by BSOD
First you will need to change your Domain Name System Server (DNS Server) from your old one to your new one. Depending on who host your domain name there will be a setting where you can change that.(Which can take 24 hours or more depending on your host)
Then basically all you need to do is transfer all your files from your old host to your new host
