Question by chicagodude420: When you buy a domain name from godaddy do you own it or just rent it?
When you buy a domain name from godaddy do you own it or rent it? If you own it how come you only sign up for like 2 years at a time?

Are there other ways to buy a domain name where you own it forever? I recently heard of a guy in Chicago buying the domain name Chicago2016 and now the Olympic committee is trying to buy it from him or sue him to get it. I thought it may be a good idea to buy some names I think might be popular a few years down the road and holding onto them. Wha’ts the best site to buy domain names from in terms of cheapest and longest. Thanks

From what I understand domain registrations are typically not offered for more then 10 years at a time.

Buying domains that you aren’t using is called Cybersquatting. According to the United States federal law known as the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, is registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The cybersquatter then offers to sell the domain to the person or company who owns a trademark contained within the name at an inflated price.

It is typically frowned upon and many times the courts have made the squatters hand over the domain name to those that have the rights to it. Particularly if they never used it for their own website or are hosting less then mainstream content on it.

Question by iFargle: Help with goDaddy web hosting. How do I get rid of the banner?
at the top of my page, there is this ginormous banner advertising for goDaddy and google. how do i get rid of it

As long as you are using godaddy’s free webhosting service that banner will always be there. You could choose a different webhosting company or go with godaddy’s hosting.

I suggest you go with godaddy because it will be more simple for you. Their basic ‘economy’ package is all you will need, it’s only /month.

You got a nice domain name, good job :)

Your best bet is to call them and see if they can do it for you. If not, then you’ll have to copy all of your files and export your database(s), then import them to the new server.

If you have a pay package, there shouldn’t be any ads. If you’re talking about when you transfer your files because the old ones had ads, don’t worry. The ads should be separate from your files, so they won’t transfer with them.

Question by Jess: I bought a web site from godaddy and cant get rid of top advertisement, i purchased hosting with them…..?

Best answer:

Answer by TristanVR
You are in luck. I had to do this last night. And after some tries I got it. When you buy a domain from them they give you a free hosting credit. Do not use it. That is what I did and got what you are getting now.
When you go to your hosting list, you will see the list of hosting accounts you have set up. Yours probably says something like “Economy hosting (free blah blah )”
If you bought economy hosting, it should not have the “free” part.
I canceled my free hosting account. Then assigned the domain name to my real paid account. Beware, if you have stuff in the free hosting account, it will be deleted when you cancel. Download it locally first.
You have to wait a long time after you cancel for it to get processed. Go to sleep and continue next morning. This frees the domain to be assigned to the paid hosting account. Check the emails they sent you for instructions. If you get stuck, call them. They are extremely helpful.
