It all depends. Google for example looks at 106 factors to rank a page. No one knows all 106 but SEO’s do their best. That is why tweaking and keeping up with what is going on in SEO is important.

First put some useful contents on your website, second add meta tags to your pages and submit it to search engines. Register your site for multiple years and share like of your site with other good sites. This will improve ranking on search engines.

You can get email database from some vendors who sell it on CD, but you might get blocked if you send email using your ISP email account or your website account. Spamming is no longer tolerated these days.

We were a small software business and we have built ourselves up based on SEO alone. When we started we were only 2 persons and we have generated enough sales on the web to grow to 50 persons. Take a look at our website http://www.emanio.com. This has all been done through SEO.

However, one of the many problems that I had in building the business was that there are so many charlatans out there promising the sky but delivering nothing. We wasted a lot of money with bad SEO firms until we finally found one that was both cheap (a requirement since we had almost no money) and good.
