Question by Mikey: If i trademark a name, will I be able to get the domain I once hadback?
I had the domain romantiqueinteriors.com for 2 years. Then I let it go (thinking no one would want it) and then I typed it today to find its “coming soon” I checked Whois and it says purchased in 2006, so do you think this could be a person “parked” on that domain?

If I get the name trademarked, will I be able to have legal power over this name? I also did a search online and found 1 person in the entire web that says in an interview they started a business called Romantique Interiors in the chicago area, I tried my best to find if its registered locally in chicago and I can’t see it listed, and apparently no one has trademarked the name as far as I can see. Please help me with this!

You have no legal right to a domain name, even with a trademark. I remember when the Center for Disease Control was trying to buy the domain name for “bird flu”, and the guy who owned it got into a bidding war with them for it. He was just some guy who had the foresight to buy the domain name before the pandemic broke out. They had to pay him big $’s to get control of it.

Question by basketball25: once you register a domain name, what do you do to create the site?
I’ve got this program that helps me make web pages. I’m also about to get some webhosting space. Do I just upload my pages to the webhosting space?
yes, I have dreamweaver, and I think I might have an old version of frontpage…

You have to get it ‘hosted’ somewhere. Sometimes the company you registered the domain from offers hosting services as well. Contact them about hosting plans or if they can direct you to a hosting company. Before you host with anyone, ask if they have an application available that will allow you to build your website from within your hosting account. Most hosting companies have this and it will let you build your site without knowing too much about the technical stuff to build a website.

As far as uploading, some programs like Frontpage, let you upload in a certain way. Other programs like Dreamweaver let you use FTP. You need to find out how your particular program let’s you upload files—most are FTP. If yours is FTP, your hosting account will have a FTP function and most likely instructions on how to set your program up to upload your files. Since this is the most common way of uploading files, just search your application’s help file or ask the host directly for help. They’ll give you all the help you need because they want your site up and running so they can keep billing you :-)

I would recommend buying from http://www.JordanSoft.com; it is a Wild West Domain reseller similar to GoDaddy. In other words, both of them are selling the same products.

http://www.JordanSoft.com is cheaper than GoDaddy for most of the same products. Buying from http://www.JordanSoft.com or GoDaddy makes no difference in service, but you can compare prices to save you a few bucks. For example:

.COM: .99/year on GoDaddy, .99/year on http://www.JordanSoft.com

.NET: .99/year on GoDaddy, .49/year on http://www.JordanSoft.com

.ORG: .99/year on GoDaddy, .99/year on http://www.JordanSoft.com

And also for the hosting accounts:

. Economy Plan: 10 GB Disk Space, 300 GB Transfer.
Starting at .25/mo on GoDaddy, starting at .79/mo on http://www.JordanSoft.com

. Deluxe Plan: 150 GB Disk Space, 1,500 GB Transfer
Starting at .95/mo on GoDaddy, starting at .89/mo on http://www.JordanSoft.com

. Unlimited Plan: Unlimited Disk Space, Unlimited Trasnfer
Starting at .74/mo on GoDaddy, starting at .49/mo on http://www.JordanSoft.com

If you want to have a free domain name, you can take a look at the following options:

. YourName.tk available at www.dot.tk
. YourName.co.cc available at www.co.cc
. YourName.co.nr available at www.freedomain.co.nr

Be warned, those free domains can be canceled at any time. You don’t own them.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Josh S: How do i enable the feature on godaddy that enables whois privacy once ive bought my domain? How much is it?

Private Registration is 8.99 per year, per domain.

If you have already registered the domain name, it will take the amount of time left on your registration and prorate the amount for private registration. For example, you bought a domain 2 months ago and you now decide to add privacy to the domain. When you add privacy to your shopping cart, it will only charge you for the 10 months left on the domain. Below is a set of instructions on how to add privacy to your existing domain.

To Add Privacy to Your Existing Domains:

1. Log in to your Account Manager (Go Daddy Account).
2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
3. Use the checkbox(es) to select the domain name(s) you want to modify.
4. Click Upgrade.
5. Select Private Registration, and then click Next.
6. Select one of the following:

Use existing account
If you already have an account with Domains By Proxy, enter your User ID and Password for the account.
Create account
If you do not have an account, we create a Domains By Proxy account for you. We send the user name and password in an email message after creating your account.

7. If you agree to the Domain Name Proxy Agreement, select I have read and agree to the Domain Name Proxy Agreement.
8. Click Next.
