Question by John Weber: I work for a small business, and we need a new web host. Where do I start? I can’t find trusted reviews!?
We have 1 website, about 5 email addresses. I can’t tell which reviews for web hosts are real and which are advertisements!

Hi Vinny, I have both a review and a few tips. When I first got involved in building a website I used comcast and set up a basic website. I had no previous experience with html. I though that I did a great job. I realized that my site was not receiving any traffic so I set up a Google adwords account. I was spending quite a bit of money to direct traffic to my site. The traffic was not helping either. I realized that my content was not good enough to keep people interested in what I had to offer. My problem did not lie with comcast. I did not have any experience with proper web design. I read up on some information on building traffic and realized that I needed to start over. I searched many web hosts and compared them side by side. I found a web host that fit my needs to a “T”.
They provided me with assistance, training, forum support and evaluated each step of my design/build for optimal performance. I would suggest that you do the same by comparing several. This will ensure that you find the one that suits you as well. Try first comparing feature by feature then dollar for dollar. No, but I’ve shopped host providers long enough to give a few good reviews.

If your just wanting to host one site, cheap-domainregistration.com (or go-daddy.com… they’re the same company) has a cheap solution that reliable and easy to use… They have recient versions of PHP and MySQL installed. They also have a reasonalbe set of pre-installed apps. The control panel is not cpanel (a plus in my book.)

If you looking for unlimited domains, I use Hardhathosting.net. They are pretty cool. One advantage of these guys is that you have a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) so if someone else locks up their MySQL server, it doesn’t pull you down. They use the Sphera control panel which is pretty cool compaired to most I’ve seen (way better than cpanel) though some of their apps are dated. The people who run the place and the techs are very cool.

I haven’t used them yet, but dreamhost.com advertises some well priced packages that seem reasonable.

That’s at least 60 hours of research, and I won’t get paid a nickel for any of it.
