Question by iluvs: Where do I go to register a cheap domain name without hosting? I want to secure the name while its available?
When I do a search, ultimately I end up with a hosting company. I haven’t decided on a host yet but I want to secure the domain name while I can. Its my understanding that if you get a free domain with a host. That it basicaly belongs to the host. If you decide you want to go somewhere esle you can’t take the name with you. I am also looking into having a ecommerce site designed. Thought I would try a freelance designer thinking I could keep the price reasonable. Any tips?

Question by wchance28: Is it okay to buy and secure the domain name first before finding a host?
Suppose I buy my domain name through 1and1, do I have the obligation to use their hosting or once I have purchased the domain name (through whatever service), I can freely go to any host I wish to choose, and they will only ask me ‘do you need to register a domain or do you already have one?’

Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by J.J.’s Advice / Avis de J.J.
Certainly you can buy the domain first. Just be careful not to accept any of their offers of hosting. Usually you’ll be bombarded with advertising for various hosting and e-mail services before actually getting to the checkout.
As members of ICANN, registrars are obligated to allow you to simply purchase a domain name without buying any of their other products.
