Question by wht_fool: if i register a domain name with a hosting service is that in their name?
what i am trying to ask is if i buy a hosting and domain registration package if later i decide i want to change hosting services do i have control of that domain name or do they?

MOST will register the domain in your name. They will put your details in administrator contact and their own details in technical contact. You will then recieve domain name control panel login details and notification/request for approval of any changes requested. You would have control of the name. Confirm that this is how they do it before you send ‘em money.

There are some hosting companies that offer free domain with hosting package that enter their own info in Administrator contact and you could lose your domain name.

I just noticed that some random domain is hosting what appears to be an exact copy of my website on their domain name… I did a Who is search and there was no useful information and what was available was in Chinese which I goggled and got no real information from. I called my hosting company and they said that nothing can be done…
So they don’t appear to be using my content to promote themselves but still… how do I get this off the web?

Unless you contact the domain owner directly, nothing can be done.

When I left their hosting i landed at http://www.ixwebhosting-unlimited-pro.moneysavecenter.com?id=m3y227 so far so good.

well I know they they pay very little.
you may want to try Yahoos version which pays more or adbrite’s
