Question by Jerry: How to change a Domain name with no traffic loss?
Hi
I need to change my domain name. My website has around 3 million unique visitors/month and generates revenue through adsense. It has around 10.000 pages.
I have to change my domain name. I am very concern with traffic loss and revenue loss. I will 301 redirect all the old pages to the new domain.
Is it possible to do it without traffic loss and revenue loss? How can I do it?
What is the best option in my situation?

Your hosting service should allow you to “forward” or “redirect” any url without the user noticing a weird time lapse. I would suggest looking at what they offer in terms of these services. I used domainsite and godaddy, and they both offer these tools for seamless redirects.

http://hostingrefugee.com has loads of article reviews on hosting and gives you links to webhosts that give you 3 month free trial! so make sure you get a good hosting first
Thats the main thing as for your actual old domain you can do 3 types of redirect:
stealth (they still see old domain url but on the new site
Visable redirect, they see the change in url
Html redirect which is a small code you put in the header of the page which auto redirect them in 5 seconds to the new site.
the first two options are available by most hosts inder domain url options or such like, contact the hosting for guidence. The third means that whilst you change hosting the site will be down unless for the 24 hours it takes for dns transfer but then will flow traffic to your new site.
A final option is to host both domains new and old but make a sngle page notice on the old redirecting users.

Question by myportraitdrawing: Besides Search Engine Optimization, what are other cheap easy ways to get traffic to your website?
Best answer:
Answer by ravyn007
- Links from other sites to your using specific keywords
- XML/RSS feeds
- Make sure the title tags on your site are short but descriptive
- Key words in your alt tags
- Manually submit your site to the major search engines
- Make sure there is text on your page that gives enough information to search engines (search engines do not read images)
- Create and maintain a good site map
- Regular updates to your site with date of last update on your site specified
Lastly you can try a simple Google adwords campaign (you can even set limits so you do not spend more than a certain amount per day on click throughs). You can even use the adword tool just to see how popular your particular keywords are.
