Question by Christine & Michael S: Best Web Host to sell Used Books?
I currently have a used bookstore on ebay and half.com and would like to branch out onto my own web site. I am looking for a web hosting service that will meet my needs. I use Auctiva for my book listings on ebay and like the search ISBN number. It will pull up the book along with description and photo. Is there a Host that offers that feature? I am also looking for an easy site to build. Any suggestions?

Question by atanism: how to find out if a brand name is already being used or copyrighted or trademarked?
I know of a good way which is to search the name on good search engines and check if its already in use, or check by searching for domain names from domain name services.
But is there a worlwide database of brand names that are legally registered, where I can find online? A more assuring way to find out if the brand name I just thought of is already being used by other people or organisations.

Or also to find out whether certain words or names are copyrighted, for eg; darth, galactus, etc…

Hi,

there’s a handy tool:

Use the “site legalities” search function and you can search for trademarks in 18 countries.

Question by Johnny rotten: Is this illegal ? A rival company has used a domain name the same as our company name to direct people to them?
I wanted to set up a web page for our business. On trying to secure the domain name i found that a rival company has secured the .co.uk domain name with our name in it.
When you do a search it takes you to a page which re-directs you to their website!.
Can they legally do this ?.I know they can secure any domain name that’s available but can it be used in this way ?

Not being an attorney my best guess is that unless you took out a copy right on the name or trade marked it you have little recourse.

I made a similar mistake about 10 years or more ago, I filmed a television commercial and used my company name in the commercial prior to obtaining the domain name for it. Later when I applied for the domain name, I discovered the .com was in use elsewhere. However, .org, .net, .biz, .mobi, were all open and available so I registered them.

Your difficulty appears to be the redirect page, and that is an entirely different can of worms.

I would suggest changing your domain spelling enough to get away from the redirect.

Or change your domain altogether which would completely solve your problem.

You state you want to set up a web page; and this leads me to believe you haven’t gone to that expense yet, and are in the planning stages. So changing your domain name shouldn’t be that difficult.

If you are adamant about the domain name you’ve chosen, then I suggest using .mobi . There are millions more people with mobile devices than computers, and if you build your site to be .mobi compliant, you’ll open up a big world of customers.

People in third world countries may not have computers, but they do have mobile phones to communicate with, think about it.

Question by Survivor: When you register a domain name with a registrar what are the URL settings used for?
How and when should these settings be used?

Best answer:

Answer by Colinc
It is not much use having a domain name unless you have a web site. It is no good having a web site if nobody can find it. The url settings are to tell the registrars DNS servers where your web site is hosted. It will also need to know where your mail servers are.
