Web Server:
A web server is a computer program that delivers (serves) content, such as this web page, using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The term web server can also refer to the computer or virtual machine running the program.

The term “Web server” often refers only to the HTTP server software in the machine, which provides the Web site functionality.

Web Hosting Service:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

Question by LePetitPrince: I need a webhost that offers membership for visitors. Can you please help?
like paying membership.
I already have my site of 3 years, on another web host and I’m thinking of making a little bit of money out of it. I get about 25,000 visitors per month.

the new web hosts are really difficult to use.. like I don’t know anything about FTP manager and PHP it’s all confused.. and now this new fantastico feature is really not practical.. Help!

http://www.DependableHost.net !

You can use their control panel, and create unlimited username/passwords to access a certain part of the site. You can have your main homepage, then restrict access to a “members only” area.

Their support department showed me how to do it – and I had it setup within minutes – seriously!

Use their “1 month free” coupon before the end of the year – and you can try them 30 days totally free of charge!!! Good host, highly recommended!

Question by tcarrw: How can I create a website without a weird webhost site.?
I want to create a website like a yahoo.com or ebay.com. I do not want to use these websites I just would like to know how to get a domain without going through a web hosting site. How can I do this. is it even possible to do?

Your question is a little confused… Do you want a Web site or a domain? A domain is something like example.com. A Web site is a set of associated resources that are served by a Web server. They’re very different things, although often times a domain will have a Web site and the Web site is often the only way a domain is used. But you can have a domain without a Web site (perhaps enabled just for FTP or email or telnet), and you can have a Web site without a domain if you’re OK with having somebody else’s domain in the address for your site.

If you want a site at your own domain, I recommend taking a look at NearlyFreeSpeech.net, since they’re way, way cheap and still give you a lot of power. It wouldn’t be appropriate for a corporate Web site, but you don’t sound like you’re on that road anyway.
